Vote India Vote!

        a thought for sustainable democracy

We are fortunate to live in a country like India where we have been following true democracy for years. This is an open question to every youth of this country – What we would have done if we were in the situation of uprisings all across middle-east where even the D of democracy is not visible? Wouldn't it be imperative to lift the guns and fight for life? So why not come out of our lazy holiday moods and vote and at least try to maintain the level of democracy we have got if not improve it ? Voting is just for one day, from rest of the 364 days, Democracy works only when you work it. You may think that your single vote won't make much difference but when this single vote gets combined with several other like-minded votes, it can form a government. On the other side, if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about the governance howsoever bad it may be.

Apart from this view, one deep thought tells me that even if all candidates are bad or corrupt, we must vote. This will help to keep democracy alive. There will always be a thinking line existing among all politicians that people are participatory and people are keeping watch on the system. This thought itself is sufficient to improve the current situation. We are living in a societal structure where it is not possible to separate our work, our life, our family, our hobbies, our aspirations from existence of other people. The meaning of governance is to keep this structure streamlined and within moral, legal, social and cultural limits. The point is we don't think at this level and always try to look ourselves as a separate entity from society (at least on the vote day).

Some people say, political party matters for them, some say the candidate is more important, some say that the new option of "None of the above" is excellent. But in my view, these are all secondary things given the current situation of 50 per cent voter turnout on an average everywhere. The primary thing is to make up our mind to think ourselves as an important part of this democracy and determine to vote. Democracy will be sustainable by this attitude which may otherwise go the middle-east way. Vote for change, vote for a better future!
