THE FIGURES OF FRENCH E-COMMERCE

After attending classes about e-business in India, I thought it would be interesting to bring my French contribution to this blog with a little summary about the health of e-commerce in France, through some key figures.

General sells: French e-commerce is going well. For the year 2013, sells have increased by 16% in general, with an incredible increase by 120% on smartphones. French people are buying twice as much from their smartphones  than from their computers, and French institutions expect that at the end of year 2013, mobile sells would be 6 times bigger than in 2011.

French online consumers: However, the number of people buying online hasn't increased much. There are only 3% more online consumers in 2013 than in 2012, even though more than 5,000 new online shops have been created since june 2013. Today, there are about 128,000 French online shops, and a 7,000 more are expected before 2014.

Average expenses: It's also important to consider that e-commerce hasn't always work so well in France. The average amount of money spent in a website per user as dropped during 24 months and is just beginning to rise again. Today, the average basket is about 87 Euros, and every consumer shop 5.5 times a year, for an average of 476 Euros a year.

Purchase behavior: Most of the buyers are young and live in cities. They buy overall travels services (59% of online hoppers), cultural products (53%), and clothing (48%). They want their products to be delivered directly at home for 82% of them, and 48% of them have already bought or sold on a C2C website.

Jobs: Finally, it can be noticed that e-business has a good impact in the job area, and offers new perspectives to unemployees and newly graduate people. Since 2012, more than 75,000 jobs have been created for the development of online shops. 86% of companies are planning to hire before the end of 2013.
